A person’s weight can be calculated easily by stepping on a scale. However, measuring height from head to toe for some senior citizens and people with spinal problems is difficult to do alone and does not always produce accurate results. Since the arm span of each person is more or less equal to their height, it gives people an alternative method of estimating their height. Calculating arm span and height is easy to do using simple household materials.
Full Arm Span Measurement
Stand straight against a wall and keep your heels together.
Stretch both the arms away from your body, extending the arms at your shoulders. Your arms and body should make a 90-degree angle.
Measure the arm span using the measuring tape, measuring from the tip of the right hand middle finger to tip of the left hand middle finger. This gives the accurate measurement of your arm span.
Half Arm Span Measurement
Place the edge of the tape measure on the tip of your middle finger. Extend your arm at your shoulder. Your arm and body should make a 90-degree angle.
Keep the measuring tape level. Mark the area from the tip of your middle finger to the middle of your collar bone or sternal notch.
Multiply the half arm span by 2. If your half arm span is 35 inches, your full arm span is 70 inches. Use this procedure if you cannot stretch both the hands due to injury.
Height Measurement
Place several pieces of thick cardboard on the ground. Attach the edges of the cardboard with duct tape. The cardboard sheet should be taller than you are and is used to protect your wall from marks.
Place the cardboard sheet vertically against the wall. Tape the top of the cardboard sheet to the wall using masking tape.
Stand straight with your back against the cardboard sheet and keep your heels together.
Place a pencil level with the top of your head. Mark your height on the cardboard sheet using a pencil.
Remove the cardboard sheet from the wall. Draw a horizontal line from the pencil mark using a ruler. Cut along the marked line using scissors.
Lay one end of the cardboard sheet on the ground against the wall. Lie on the cardboard sheet. Your head should be touching the wall. Place the soles of your feet at a 90-degree angle. If soles of your feet are level with the bottom edge of the cardboard sheet, you have taken an accurate height measurement.
Measure the distance from the top edge of the cardboard sheet to the bottom edge of the cardboard sheet using a tape measure. The distance is equal to your height.
Tip
- Wear minimal clothing while measuring the height. Don’t wear shoes.
Tip
- Some people have longer or shorter arms than their actual height. Arm span measurement is only an estimate of your true height.

Foresters use a clinometer to calculate the tree height. These can be quite expensive to buy so you’re not likely to invest in one unless you need to measure trees frequently. However, don’t despair as it is quite possible to achieve good results with a smartphone; with the advantage that you nearly always have one with you. This is a method I’ve developed that I hope others will find useful.
Install a spirit level app
iPhone and Google Android phones (sorry, I have no working knowledge of Blackberrys) allow apps to be downloaded. There are a number of apps available that use the smartphone’s accelerometer to provide a virtual spirit level. Some of these include a tilt meter or level meter and it’s this kind that you will need to be able to measure an angle of elevation.
For the example below I use an iPhone and the Carpenter app from iHandy. The full version costs under $2 and I’ve found that it works very well.
Calibrate – the level … and yourself
- Zero your virtual spirit level
If you’ve installed a good spirit level app it should allow you to calibrate your smartphone to reasonable accuracy. On a shelf that you’ve checked to be perfectly level with a real spirit level, place your smartphone on its side , then ‘zero’ it (calibrate it to read ‘0’). - Calibrate your pacing
You will need to be able measure the distance that you are standing away from a tree. You can of course carry a long tape measure with you when you think you’ll need one but I find it very helpful to know my pacing with reasonable accuracy. For example I know that 21 of my strides equal 20m. - Measure the height above ground of your eye
Simply measure the distance from the ground under your feet to one of your eyes.
The data required
You will need to know three things:
- The angle of elevation to the top of the tree from the horizontal
As shown below the horizontal will be equivalent to a line between your eye and someone of the same height standing next to the tree. - The distance from where you stand to the base of the tree
- The height of your eye above the ground
The maths
Don’t be put off if you’re not confident about the maths as, although it may seem daunting, it’s actually quite simple. You will use trigonometry but your smartphone’s calculator will do all the hard calculations for you.
The equation you will use is:
Tan angle of elevation x distance to tree
then
+ height of eye above ground
1. Stand away from the tree
Stand away from the tree so that you can see its top. The method works best if your angle of elevation is about 45o . In other words that your distance from the tree is equivalent roughly to the height of the tree (you’ll get better at estimating this, the more trees you measure).
2. Pace (or measure) the distance away from the tree
If you are working with someone else they can help you measure the distance from where you’re standing to the tree. If you’re on your own, drop something where you’re standing to mark the position so that you can return once you’ve paced or measured the distance to the tree.
I was 21m away from my tree. Write this distance down or memorise it.
3. Measure the angle of elevation
Standing at your spot (step 2) open the virtual spirit level app on your smartphone and select the angle measure. Bring the smartphone to your eye and sight along its edge, as if you’re looking down a gunsight, aiming at the very top of the tree. You will need to hold the phone so that your fingers are not in the way (see photo).
With the app I use there is a ‘hold’ button that freezes it when you are satisfied that you are ready to record the angle.
My angle of elevation was 43.7o. Write this angle down or memorise it.
4. Calculate tree height
Open the calculator on your smartphone. You will need to access the scientific calculator. For iPhones and HTCs you can do this by tilting your phone onto its side (landscape), where you will find the function for Tangent or Tan.
So my tree was 21.798m tall. Given that there is lots of room for error I would recommend that you round the result to the nearest whole number = 22m tall. It doesn’t matter whether you use metres or feet as long as you use consistently the same units throughout (i.e. don’t switch between m and cm, or between feet and inches).
The method I describe above works well on level ground. However, if you want to increase accuracy especially if the ground is not level, you can improve it quite simply. Instead of using the height of your eye above ground, you substitute it with (Tan angle to the base of the tree x distance to tree). So the full equation would be:
(Tan ∠ to tree top x distance to tree) + (Tan ∠ to tree base x distance to tree)
You can use this method to calculate the height of other features on trees, such as the height of the lowest branch, a major fork, a bird nest or bat roost, or of course for any tall object such as a bridge or building.

How To Weigh Yourself Without A Scale: 3 Simple Ways To Do It
What You’ll Need
Calculator
Calculator is your friend if you’ll measure your weight without the scale. You need to do basic mathematics to get your estimated weight. Any type of calculator will do- scientific, the basic model, or even the one found on your phone.
For Method 1, the calculator will be needed to calculate the volume of water displaced. For Method 2, the calculator will be used to multiply the number of 1-gallon cans by the conversion factor, 8.33 pounds, to get your weight.
Container
For the water displacement method, the container you’ll need should be large enough to submerge yourself completely. If you have a bathtub, the better, but if you don’t, then find an empty water barrel that will fit you properly.
Pen Marker
The pen marker is essential in determining the water displaced. You’ll need to mark the container to be guided on how much water to fill. While you’re submerged in the water, you also need to mark the level of water again.
With the two markers, you can measure the vertical distance to get the volume of water displaced. Alternatively, you can use a grease pencil if you can’t find a pen marker at home.
Tape Measure
Another item that you need to have for this water displacement method is a tape measure. The tape measure will be needed when you’ll measure the length and width of your container. Use any tape measure that you have available.
Ruler (optional)
To measure the vertical distance between the two markers, a ruler might be more convenient. If you have no ruler available, you can use the tape measure the vertical distance of two water levels.
Water
Of course, the water displacement method won’t be complete without water. You might need to use a lot of water since you’ll be submerging yourself from head to toe. To avoid any skin irritations, use clean water always.
How To Measure My Height Without Measuring
Cans Of Paint
For this lever and fulcrum method, several cans of paint will be needed to balance yourself in the see-saw. The best size of paint cans is one gallon. However, you might need to prepare a couple of smaller sizes to get an accurate weight reading. Alternatively, you can use one-gallon water containers.
See-Saw
The see-saw will be used as a place where you and the cans balance each other. If you have a see-saw built outside your home, then you’re lucky. However, if you don’t, then it might be best to build your own. I know, it sounds inconvenient, but you can always get a long lumber to make a lever and some wood for the fulcrum.
Skin Fold Caliper
To get the accurate measurements of your body fat composition around your triceps, thighs, and stomach area. You can buy a skin fold caliper for less than $10.
Soft Tape Measure
The s oft tape meas ure will be used to get the circumference of your waist. Make sure that the tape measure you used still have visible numerical markings so the circumference will be easy to read.
Pen And Notebook
To keep track on your progress, you need to write the measurements on a notebook. This will help tell you whether you’re losing weight or not.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Method 1: Water Displacement
In the water displacement method, we’ll be using the Archimedes Principle which holds the formula: density = mass/ volume.

For water, the density is 1 gram per cubic centimeter, so whatever the volume of water displaced is, it will be equivalent to your weight in grams.
Mark And Fill The Container
To begin, use the tape measure to get the surface area (length * width) of your container in centimeters. Next, mark a height that’s a bit lower than the top of your container to indicate the first level of water. Now, fill the container with water up to the height that you marked.
Submerge Yourself Into The Container And Mark
Submerge yourself into the container that’s filled with water. To mark the rise of water level, asked someone to do it for you because it might be hard while you’re under water.
Calculate The Volume Displaced
After that person marked the change of water level, get out of the water before you lose your breath now, get ready to measure the volume displaced by your body. Use a ruler to get the vertical distance in centimeters between the two markers.
To get the volume displaced, multiply the surface area of your container with the vertical distance between two markers. Turn off private browsing firefox. So if your surface area is 3000 centimeters and the vertical distance displaced is 20 centimeters, then the volume displaced is 60,000 cubic centimeters. Since your weight is equal to the volume displaced, your weight will be 60,000 grams or 60 kilograms.
Method 2: Lever And Fulcrum
In this lever and fulcrum method, we’ll be using the number of cans to get your estimated weight. Here are the complete steps.
Place Cans At The Other End Of The See-Saw
Position yourself at the end of the see-saw. While sitting, ask someone to place the 1-gallon cans of paint or 1-gallon water on the other side. You’ll possibly notice that you get lifted off the ground when more cans are placed on the other end.
If your see-saw gets a perfect balance, stop adding more load. If not, consider adding a smaller-sized load, like half gallons or quarters until you reach the perfect balance.
Calculate Your Estimated Weight
To get your weight in pounds, count the number of cans used and multiply it by 8.33, assuming that you use all 1-gallon sized cans. For example, you used 11 cans, your weight will be 11 * 8.33 pounds = 91.63 pounds.
However, if you have mixed some half-gallons, count them separately. For example, you have used 10 one gallons and two half gallons, your weight will be: 91.63 + [2 * 1/2 * 8.33] = 99.96 pounds.
Method 3: Body Fat Measurement
This method won’t tell you of your weight per se, but it can help you keep track of how much weight you lose. Instead of focusing on your weight, you should focus on how many numbers you lose monthly. Here are the complete instructions.
Measure Body Fat
Monitor your body fat by using the skin fold caliper around the triceps, suprailiac, and thigh. To use, gently pinch a skin around the body part that you want to measure and clip with the caliper, as shown in this video.
With your pen, record the results on your notebook. Since doing this daily or weekly won’t give visible results, do this body fat measurement monthly. Your target here is to see the number reduce each month.
Measure Waist Circumference
The size of your waist will also determine if you have an excessive amount of fat, known as visceral fat. A waist larger than 35 inches on a woman or 40 inches on a man means a great surplus of visceral fat.
To measure your waist, use the soft tape measure and loop around your waist. Hold it firm and pressed into your skin. Make sure that your abdomen is relaxed when doing this. Like the caliper measurement, record results to track progress. If your waist circumference is getting lower, then it indicates weight loss.

Dr. Dan DiBacco suggests using your senses when measuring weight. You can tell that you’re losing or gaining weight based on your clothes. If they don’t fit, then it’s more likely that you have gained some weight.
Your reflection in the mirror will also tell you how much you weigh. If you’re getting bigger lately, then you should take this signal to watch your diet.
2.Take A Regular Activity Evaluation Test
Nutrition coordinator Kelly Hogan recommends taking a flight of stairs weekly. If you’re losing breath when you reach the top of the stairs, then it means your body is getting heavy. If not, then you’re doing right with your diet.

Measuring Penis Length
Start by measuring the length of your penis:
- Position a ruler or measuring tape at the base of the erect penis , where it attaches to the body.
- Press into the pubic bone as far as you can, until you contact the bone. This is especially important if there's a lot of belly fat.
- Measure from the base to the end of the tip.
The average erect penis length is between 13.12 centimeters (5.17 inches).
Measuring Penis Girth
Next, measure the girth of the penis (that is, the circumference or thickness):
- For this step, use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string. If you choose the latter, make sure it doesn't have any stretch. A length of yarn, for example, could introduce measurement errors.
- Gently wrap the tape or string one time around the thickest part of the shaft of the erect penis.
- Note where the ends of the tape meet; that's the number you're looking for. If you're using string, mark where the end of the string meets the rest of it, then stretch out the string and use a ruler to measure the distance from the mark to the end.
- The average penis girth is 11.66 centimeters (4.59 inches).
Measuring Penis Width
Some condoms are sized according to width or diameter. To get this measurement, first find the girth, using the method described above and divide by 3.14.
Using Your Penis Size to Choose a Condom
Once you are confident that you have figured out your penis size, you should be able to determine what size condom you need.

There are two main ways of measuring weight. They are:
- Calculating your body mass index (BMI).
- Measuring your waist circumference.
Both methods of weight measurement are a good indicator of your weight so feel free to use either one, or try both! Whether you use BMI or waist circumference, measuring your weight should not be intimidating. Remember, you’re doing this because you care about yourself, your family and most importantly – your HEALTH.
Which Weight Measurement Method is Right for You?
- Truthfully, there is no right or wrong method.
- One is not better than the other. Both BMI and waist circumference are simply tools to help you gauge your weight and health.
- Go ahead and try both of them, and write down the results to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
Waist Circumference
Measuring your waist circumference is a simple way to have insight into your health. The measurement can be used to help determine healthy weight, overweight, obesity and severe obesity.
Finding Your Waist Circumference
To find your waist circumference, place a tape measure around the area above your hip bone and below your rib cage and read the number where the tape meets itself.
What the Number Means
There is not a classification chart or various ranges used with this method to determine obesity. Only the simple thresholds for men and women noted below.
- For females, a waist circumference of 35 inches or greater is considered unhealthy.
- For males, a waist circumference of 40 inches or greater is considered unhealthy.
